Wonder is the 1st book from the WONDER series out of 4 written books. Wonder is written by R.J Palacio, an American author and illustrated by Tad Carpenter.

Ever since he was a little baby, August Pullman had gone through quite a lot. Surgeries, doctor appointments, ambulance rides, August has had it all. Despite only being 10 years old he is not the average normal kid. Auggie was born with his face deformed or, in his words, disordered. But despite all the fuss, underneath, he’s actually quite a normal kid.

Up until now, August has been home schooled, but it’s time for him to grow up, to go to a proper middle school. But, if you thought being a new kid was hard, imagine August, being a new kid and having a deformed face. So, fitting in wasn’t as easy as you would have hoped. On the first day he is all by himself, no one going near him. Then, finding two new friends, Summer and Jack-Will, he starts to feel ‘normal’, kind of.

After a drastic change of events where August is feeling on top of the world, then down in the dumps when friendship problems with Jack-Will start. But, can August still find a way to prove that he isn’t just a poor little sick boy but a strong, determined big boy? And, can he find a way to save his friendship with Jack-Will? Read the book to find out!

Learning August’s story and what he’s been through is so inspirational. Learning how hard it was, the sicknesses, operations, and the hospital trips, makes you feel lucky to be who you are. Listening to different points of view from the main characters: August, Via, Summer and Jack-Will, you start to understand that friendship means the world to people and that you can’t deceive it.

I very much enjoyed Wonder as it is a captivating, action-packed and well written story, with a very satisfying plot and unexpected conclusion. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone between the ages of 8 and 16 (but my mum also sneak-peaked and read it when I wasn’t looking). Now I’m looking forward to see if R.J. Palacio will write any more books for the Wonder series.

Below is the Wonder movie trailer to find out a bit about what Auggie and his friends look and feel like.
